Use it if: You’re someone who wants to stay on top of their money and save towards big goals, while on-the-go from your smartphone. Empower (@empowermeapp) will track your finances and let you set a goal to save up for. Then it’ll recommend ways you can increase your savings by canceling subscriptions, suggesting places to cut back, and even negotiating lower rates for your payments.
OppLoans: What benefits does the Empower app provide your users?
Phuong: Empower is the one app users need to manage their money, from tracking their expenses to building up savings. We have the best-in-class auto-categorization engine that accurately labels your spending and tallies it up in intelligent monthly reports. We make it easy to set up goals and start saving towards bigger things in life. And we have the best customer service in fintech! In our users’ words (from app store reviews):
“This app checks all my account, helps me categorize them, points out anomalies, and gives me summaries of my income and spending and even negotiates better deals with some vendors!”
“This app keeps it simple and just works.”
“I’ve used mint, Olivia, Penny, and Trim. I’ve gotten more value in a short period of time using Empower.”
“I’ve recommended it to younger people to begin their financial journey in a wise place.”
“The CEO also seems very engaged and called me to get my feedback on the app which says a lot about their commitment to customer service.”
OppLoans: What features are you most proud of?
Phuong: Our mobile-first design that is more like Apple (intuitive, friendly to the masses) than Microsoft (powerful features but clunky). Our tracking capabilities that include the categorization engine, spending tracker (track spending of Amazon, Uber or dining and drinks) and our terrific head of ops and customer success who always get back to users within 24 hours.
OppLoans: What’s the story behind the creation of Empower?
Phuong: Our co-founders Warren Hogarth (@warrenhogarth) and Justin Ammerlaan ( @justinammerlaan) are both immigrants to this country. Despite responsible financial habits and savviness (both have graduate degrees from top universities such as Harvard and Melbourne Business School), they were punished by being “financial outsiders” ie. not getting 5 credit cards or the regular debt burden of Americans that FICO score calculation relies on. Warren, having invested in the likes of Airbnb, Instacart and Reddit at Sequoia Capital, saw the power of technology when combined with fiercely independent advocacy for the consumers. Hence, Empower was born to help consumers take back control of their finances.
OppLoans: Are there any upcoming features or releases you’d like our readers to be aware of?
Phuong: We’re launching an Android app at the end of this year as well as releasing customized recommendations in the app that help you do better financially. Also new and existing users can refer their friends and earn up to $60 while their friends get $5 from us to start saving!
