10 Best Summer Scholarships of 2019

Summer scholarships

Get a head start on scholarship applications with these sizzling opportunities.

What Scholarships Can I Apply for Over the Summer?

Students can apply for many scholarships over the summer months. To start, they can search for scholarships with summer deadlines, but other possibilities include:

  • Spring scholarships with deadlines in early summer
  • Year-round scholarships that continuously accept applications
  • Scholarships with deadlines in the fall that begin accepting applications over the summer

Typically, scholarship cycles follow the school calendar, with two distinct application “seasons” that run during the fall and spring semesters. However, some scholarships—especially those with quarterly awards—have summer cycles too.

While there might be fewer scholarships over the summer, one of the benefits of applying during that time is that it allows students to get a jumpstart on securing education funds before the school year begins. Without the demand of classes, the summer months offer students more time to devote to their applications. Also, awards are typically distributed within a couple months of application deadlines, meaning that summer scholarships will contribute to a student’s fall tuition, while later scholarships might not be credited to a student’s account until the following academic year.

Where Do I Find Summer Scholarships?

A good way to find summer scholarship opportunities is to use one of the many available scholarship sites. Most of them allow users to search by deadline, so students can find scholarships with summer due dates.

Another important feature that scholarship sites offer is the ability to search for specific eligibility criteria. Many scholarships have narrow requirements, and while they might exclude certain students, those who do qualify have less competition and a better chance of receiving an award.

Eligibility factors might include race, gender, area of study, or extracurricular activity. Some scholarships are only available to residents in a particular state or county.

When searching for a scholarship, it’s important to find the right fit. And even if students meet the eligibility requirements, standing out from other applicants will depend on what, specifically, the review committee is looking for and who the scholarship is intended to serve.

What Are Some Good Summer Scholarships?

There’s no single answer to this question, as the best scholarships to apply for are the ones that students have the best chance of receiving. Students should narrow their search by looking for scholarships that seem like a good fit and focus their efforts there.

While finding the right scholarship is important, applying for them is still something of a numbers game, and most experts recommend applying to as many scholarships as possible.
