Interview with Andrew Dennis, VP Global Business Strategy and Operations for Penny

OppLoans: What benefits does the Penny app provide your users?

Andrew: Penny provides people with a simple and intuitive way to view their finances. Many people can quickly feel overwhelmed or frustrated when trying to understand the flow of their money. Smart ways to save aren’t always obvious, and it can be helpful to have a friend point you in the right direction. Penny does just that

Penny is a friend that looks over your finances and finds easy ways for you to save money or cut back on your spending. Often just having a clear financial picture, one that is easy to understand, is all that people need to get them on the right track.

OppLoans: What features are you most proud of?

Andrew: One of Penny’s coolest features is the ability to set spending goals. Penny looks at your spending over the last several months and suggests a few areas where you can save. The topics can be as broad as restaurants, drinks, or shopping, or more specific options like Walmart, Whole Foods, Uber, or Starbucks. From there, Penny checks in frequently to keep your spending on track and help you to achieve your goal.

We’ve found that over 60% of people end up spending less money on their goal’s target category for that month. It’s been so successful, that people have been asking for the ability to set multiple goals.

OppLoans: What’s the story behind the creation of Penny?

Andrew: The co-founders were longtime users of other personal finance management tools. Penny started as a way to address pain points that they experienced using these other services. So, Penny was started with the goal of providing a friendly, intuitive experience that helps people understand their spending better than ever before.

Penny brings meaningful context to the way you spend money, gives actionable advice on how to spend less, and finds easy ways to help you save money in a smarter way.

OppLoans: Are there any upcoming features or releases you’d like our readers to be aware of?

Andrew: Based on user demand, we recently launched the ability to set multiple goals at the same time. That’s available through Penny+, the premium subscription with other perks like extra categories, on-demand balance refreshes, and custom bill reminders. We’re also testing out a couple of awesome new features right now. Those will be available to the public in early 2018. Stay tuned!
