Borrowing Money in Charleston
Cash loans are another option if you need assistance in Charleston. There are many ways to get the cash you need when you need it. Many lenders will even loan money to people with poor or no credit. But make sure you know what to watch out for when shopping for your loan. Predatory lenders are out there and they hope to trap consumers into long cycles of debt in order to make more money.
Payday Loans in Charleston
One of the most costly loans available.
If you’ve heard of payday loans then hopefully you’ve also heard that they’re very risky. These predatory loans can be found online or in person through many types of storefront locations. They promise speedy and convenient cash with little hassle. And while they may be able to put quick cash in your pocket, they may also put you in deeper debt.
Getting a payday loan in Charleston is easy. Most people can get one, even with poor credit. Typically, you’re required to give the lender a post-dated check for the amount you’re borrowing plus interest and additional fees. The lender will then give you a cash loan, and deposit the check you provided on your next payday to make back their money. But the high fees and interest rates make it very difficult to pay them back.
In South Carolina the maximum loan you can get is $550, with a maximum term of 31 days. Lenders are allowed to charge 15% of the loan amount as a finance charge. This means for a $100 loan lasting two weeks the APR is 390%.(1) This is an outrageously high interest rate. Many people get stuck in a cycle of debt from not being able to afford the payment.
When considering all the aspects of payday loans in South Carolina, it’s easy to see how harmful they can be. If you feel you’re being taken advantage of by a predatory payday lender, contact the South Carolina Board of Financial Institutions for information.
Title Loans in Charleston
Losing your vehicle for quick cash isn’t worth it.
Having a car makes life in Charleston a lot more convenient. After all, how else would you get to work, school or the store? It’s safe to say that losing your vehicle would make life pretty difficult. This is the risk that you run when you take out an auto title loan in Charleston.
Getting an auto title loan is almost too easy, as long as you own a vehicle. All you have to do is provide your vehicle’s title to the lender and you’ll receive a cash loan for a portion of the vehicle’s value. Title loans in South Carolina usually only last 30 days. At the end of the repayment period you owe the lender the amount you borrowed plus interest and fees, which in Charleston can be as much as 300% APR.(2)
If you aren’t able to repay the loan, they may allow you to extend it, and charge you additional fees and interest. This is how people get trapped. And if you still can’t pay after a certain amount of time the lender is allowed to take away your vehicle and sell it to make their money back.
No one wants to lose their vehicle for some quick cash. If you do some research you’re likely to find a safer alternative that won’t risk your car, truck or motorcycle. If you’re currently dealing with a troublesome title loan, the South Carolina Board of Financial Institutions may be able to offer some answers.
Pawn Shops in Charleston
Don’t risk your belongings for speedy cash.
If you live in Charleston, you’ve no doubt seen a pawn shop or two. Perhaps you’ve even browsed around for some interesting and vintage items. Pawn shops can be a fun place to look around or even to sell items you no longer need. They also offer small-dollar cash loans, but these can be a risky option if you’re in need of fast cash.
Getting a pawn shop loan in Charleston is very similar to getting a title loan, but the amount you get will be much less. To get the loan you’ll offer the pawn shop a valuable item. They hold onto your item and give you a small cash loan for a fraction of what it’s worth. Then once you pay it back, you get your item back. But you may not get it back at all if you can’t afford the interest and fees that come with the loan.
For pawn shop loans up to $50 in Charleston, the maximum finance charge is $2.50 for every $10 borrowed.(3) While this is less interest than some other personal loans, it can still stack up quickly. And you’ll still be paying back more than you borrowed, while also risking the loss of a cherished belonging.
